I can't get over the tantrum my nephew threw today or how the rest of in-law family reacted to it. My seven year old nephew threw a freaking tantrum at the mother's day event today. He wanted to play some stupid wii game and the aunt and uncle had their wii unhooked.
He then wanted to take the game home and borrow it -- his parents have every other console on the planet except wii, so they said no. The kid pouted and whined and stomped around. He went outside and shouted.
He came back in and actually crumpled up on the floor and started whining. Dad tried to console him by saying "this is a collection of games you already have on your iphone" (yes the seven year old has his own freaking iphone) It didn't matter. He kept whining and crying and stomping around. My mother in law offered to BUY a Wii so that this little boy could go over to her house and play it.
Gah! Father in law said no to that. They ended up taking the game home -- who knows -- they will likely buy this kid a Wii so that he can be happy and play these games he already has on his own Iphone.

Not a good idea to reward children for bad acts in my book... In my book, throwing a tantrum such as this doesn't warrant rewards.
First let me say I'm sorry that this happened during a family gathering. It makes it not so nice for everyone else. I do think this sounds like a lot of kids today.
They can't take it when someone finally says no to them. They want something and they get it instantly. All they have to do is whin or cry!
This goes well beyond being just spolied and more about manners as well. It is rude behavior! The parents and grandparents needs to both stop acting like the world revolves around this child. It is setting bad examples for the other children in the family too.
No means no and he needs to learn that now rather then later. He is 7 now, I feel bad for everyone when he is 17 or even 27. Wow!
Sadly their is nothing you can do about it since he is not your child. I'm sorry you have to see this for family gatherings. I have a niece who used to act up a lot.
The best way to combat it was for my children to be good and set an example. My daughter finally got sick of it and told her cousin that she is acting like a brat and she doesn't hang out with brats! That was the last time my niece acted out at a family dinner.
1 Sorry to go on about it. For some reason this totally bugged the bejeezus out of me. Not just the tantrum, even though that was a display that would have mortified people on my side of the family. It was that everyone was coming up with ways so that this kid wouldn't pitch a fit.
I know it's not my business, but it really disgusted me. I felt embarassed watchng it and ashamed for some reason.

2 I've said it before and I will say it again. People need to beat their kids. It's a tried-and-true method of behavioral control.

Lychnobite replied to post #1: 3 It sounds like the kid has enough plastic toys. Do they make geography quiz type games for Wii? I bet he finds something else to throw a fit about once he gets the Wii.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
