I currently have a service thru Cingular. Where can I purchase a new cell phone without having to extend my contract? I don't have to call the phone company when I buy a new household phone, nor do I call the cable company when I buy a new TV.

The phone I currently have is old and I need to replace it, but I don't want to have to deal with extending my contract and paying activation fees, etc. I just want to shop for the best price, insert my sim card from the old phone and talk away. Is it possible to buy a phone directly off amazon and put it to use right away. Much like buying a standard household phone and plugging it into the wall.

Technically, you can insert your SIM card into any GMS phone and use your existing service. However, you may want to double check with your provider, very rarely some models aren't supported. See link for the current selections of unlocked phones available on Amazon.

Try Ebay If you purchase a Cingular ready phone on Ebay, cingular will insure it for a fee. Also, make sure iif you buy one thru Ebay, make sure it is from a reputable Ebay store, not just someone selling one to get rid of it. If you purchase a Cingular ready phone on Ebay, then you can purchase insurance for it through Cingular.

Then, if something happens to it, at least cingular will replace it. Check with your local cingular store.. mine matches online prices, also. I have purchased phones on Ebay before and then had cingular insurance to replace phone if it died without having to commit to new servce plan.
