Similar questions: CABLE BUY DIGITAL UHF ANTENNA PRESENT DVR VCR'S.
February 17, 2009 .....the switch to digital is coming, whether we like it or not. DIGITAL TVs can receive digital signals over the air, via cable or via satellite. ANALOG TVs can receive digital signals over the air ---via a converter box--as of 2/17/09, via cable or via satellite (no converter box needed if you have cable or satellite).
Our house, like yours, is seemingly in the minority and doesn't have cable. We have a digital TV and receive signals over the air (FREE! ).
We now have about 10-12 extra channels that were not available via analog. VCR's are considered "old' technology....they do not record digital signals---just analog. (But could still be used to watch VCR tapes) .
Current DVD recorders, despite being "new" technology, do not record digital signals either--just analog. (But could still be used to watch DVD's) The converter box is only applicable to the TVs and their signal and has nothing to do w/ the peripherals. The only way to record digital TV signals at this time, is TiVo, a DVR (or a cable/satellite supplied DVR).
TiVo is a subscription service (currently $12.95/month) generally used with a cable or satellite service. HOWEVER, I was recently educated (thank you Askville! ) that TiVo can and is successfully used via a "over the air" digital signal and a phone line.

Not really a problem, but... There shouldn't be a problem with using a VCR on any TV, even an HD one. But it seems to me that going out of the way to get a $200-300 DVR kind of seems pointless without having cable/satellite channels to fill that thing up. They do make HD Antennas though, most are within the $50 if you know where to look (Best Buy and Wal-Mart have a decent selection, but most electronic retailers will have them), so you can get reception of all the local HD Channels at least until you can upgrade to digital cable or satellite to get full use out of your HDTV.As for Digital DVRs, TiVo makes one, which means that competitors probably will or already have them out on the market.
MOST LIKELY Your new tv will almost certainly have a digital/analog tuner that will accept over the air signals. You should be able to get all analog stations you now get plus any unencrypted digital channels. It will also almost certainly have inputs that will accept the outputs of whatever VCRs and DVRs you now have.
The new TV should have at least 2 HDMI inputs and any new DVR or DVD player you get should have an HDMI output.
Most of the peripherals don't have tuners and will work fine. The new digital standard applied to devices with tuners, so many DVD's and VCR's are already fine. The balance of the devices, like DVR's already support the digital standard (or are receiving a digital signal through their respective providers) so those are fine as well.
You should do just fine. Hope that helps! .
1 "HD" on antennas means nothing. Its the tuner that it's connected to that matters.
