I have a Canon 17 - 85 mm lens for my Rebel XT. I need a wider angle. What lens do you suggest?
My photography is limited to nature shots and wide landscapes. I have also been on the lookout for a zoom lens. Somewhere around 600 mm - 800 mm.

You get what you pay for! When it comes to lenses, and glass in general, you get what you pay for. If you want a 600mm lens that is a good quality one for a good image, you are looking at used, around $4500-5500, and the new canon 800mm is running around $11,000.
I have an older model 500mm Canon, the F4.5 L series and it runs used around $3000-3500 depending on condition and goodies it has. Now for the average consumer, they don't need those lenses, nor do they have the cameras to get the image quality to maximize it. I also carry and use very often, the canon 100-400mm IS L series lens Its a very nice lens, a lot sharper than any of the aftermarket makers and used runs aroudn $1000-1200 on ebay.
If you can get one of them I suggest it. Otherwise, keep in mind the crop factor of your camera, as I assume not a 5D so it would be a 1.6X crop, so thus a 200mm lens on it is equal to use a 320mm lens on a film or full frame sensor like the 1Ds Mark 3 or the 5D. A great lens that is very reasonable is the Canon 70-200 F4 L series.
You can often get a used one for the $500 range and I think you can get a new one for just a tad more with the current rebates from Canon. Also they do an IS version of it which runs around $1000 and its a great lens. I loved mine.
But I had to sell it to upgrade bag to the 2.8 IS version for a race shoot I was doing. The images from the Canon 70-200 F4 lenses is going to be sharper than the images from any of the aftermarket makers, and even sharper than the 70-300 IS canon lens. Tamron makes a 70-200 F2.8 whihc is pretty nice and it runs about $700.
If you need more reach, you can also get the Canon 1.4X extender and use it on the Canon L series lenses at F4 or better, and also on the Tamron 2.8 lens if needed. For wide angle the 17-85 is a good lens. Most people don't need wider than the 17mm, and if you do, rethink the image and or move around a little.
I use a 17-40 F4 a lot and love it as well as the 24-105. That is my normal daily lens. If you must have a wider lens, get the canon 10-22mm, but I really doubt you will use it a lot as most people forget about the excess sky and or foreground in the shot which often needs to be cropped, and then to do a panoramic you will need more MP, and a higher grade sensor to do a larger one.... IF you have questions on certain lenses, let me know I have used most of them as either my own lens or in the workshops I do so I can give you imput on most of them.
Good Luck and happy shooting! Don't believe the "Amazon List Price" Its always way too high!
The 400 5.6L is a good lens also if you don't need zoom. The 300 F4 IS is awesome I sold mine to a good friend of mine and you can use the 1.4x if you have it to make it a 420mm and then add in the crop factor and your about 650ish...
I got a 30 d here is what I like I got a used 30d from my buddy so he could get a 40D. I was looking at wide angles, and have tried his a lot. He has the 17-40 and its AWESOME!
When I can afford it its my next lens. He has a 10-22 also and he says its too wide for most shots and the 17-40 works fine if you think the shot thru. Also I got the 70-200mm Tamron 2.8 I like it a lot but wish I had gotten the Canon 70-200 F4 L IS instead or even the non is but the tamron is nice but it focuses kinda slow.
A lot slower than my other buddy that has the normal 70-200 F4. He also has a 100-400 tellephoto zoom and its really cool. Pricey at like $1300+ but its good quality and a lot better quality than those knock offs liek Sigma crap!
I tried a sigma lens and it sucked! What I read was the Tamron SP is good its their pro line, but they seem to focus a little slower than the canon lenses do. Hope this helps.

Canon Digital Rebel XT Lens Suggestions The people on Digital Rebel forums pretty much agree that you should get the kit lens. It is a universal lens at a bargain price. It covers from 28.8 to 88mm (35mm equivalent).
Since 50mm (35mm equivalent) is considered native size, the kit lens takes you from wide angle to a mild zoom. When fully zoomed, it will serve well for portraits.......ReplyPermalinkReport offensive postPost 3 of 6Canon Digital Rebel XT by mn_tincup - 3/26/05 7:31 PMIn reply to: Kit lens by snapshot2 Just to clarify...your're saying stick with the lens that comes with the camera? And don't worry about any other lenses?
ThanksReplyPermalinkReport offensive postPost 4 of 6Lenses by snapshot2 - 3/27/05 8:17 AMIn reply to: Canon Digital Rebel XT by mn_tincup Yes - To start with. Until you use the camera for a while. And discover if you need a special lens.
There is no lens that is a "do everything" lens. That is why you select a camera with removable lenses. If you want to really get into macro photography and photograph insects and such.
You buy a macro lens. If you want to photograph birds at a distance, you get a long lens zoom or a non-zoom lens with a long focal length. If you get into low light photography, you may need a bright lens.
A lens with a aperture rating of f1.4 or f1.8The Canon 50mm f1.8 lens if a very popular low light lens and very affordable ($80).................The closest thing to a "do everything" lens would be a zoom lens with a focal length of 18mm to 300mm and a aperture rating of f1.8 and with macro capabilities. This would be the equivalent of a 16.7X zoom lensBut that lens does not exist. If the lens makers could make such a lens, only the very wealthy could afford it.
Even less capable lenses cost thousands of dollars...................................People who buy the Digital Rebel recomment that you get the kit lens. Use that lens for all your photography and see if you have a need for a special lens. Most Rebel users have not bought another lens.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
