De-humidify/ventilate, spray household disinfectants, remove porous materials. De-humidify and ventilate the basement. Spray household disinfectants to control mildew & mold.
Remove porous materials which can absorb water and promote mildew & mold. -------Mold CourseSome compounds produced by molds have strong smells and are volatile and quickly released into the air. These compounds are known as microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs).
Because mVOCs often have strong or unpleasant odors, they can be the source of the "moldy odor" or musty smell frequently associated with mold growth. A moldy odor suggests that mold is growing in the building and should be investigated. epa.gov/mold/moldcourse/moldcourse.pdf--... I've heard of it....but don't know if I'd try it. The tip you're referring to goes like this: "To remove a musty odor, sprinkle a hard basement floor with chlorinated lime bleaching powder, available at hardware stores. Once the odor is gone, sweep the powder into a plastic bag, tie the bag and dispose of it.
Avoid getting the powder in contact with your skin; wear vinyl gloves. " Here's my problem with this tip - it's not people or pet friendly. I think I would try this only if I was extremely desperate.
Instead, here's what I would recommend: We used to have a musty smelling basement....until we set up a dehumidifier. We keep it running through most of the year, and the smell is gone! It works brilliantly and is worth every dime.
Plus it's a lot more family and pet friendly than the other option! You can remove the musty smell with various solutions. I've never heard of lime, and I'd be hesitant to make my floor that alkaline, but I suppose it's URL1 matter what you do, though, it's going to come back until you solve the root cause. That musty smell is coming from everywhere - the surface of the wood floor joists above your head rotting just a little in the damp, mold and other stuff growing in the dust and insulation, etc. Why is your basement so damp?
Are the walls exposed? If so, consider trying to paint them with a hydraulic sealant, like Killz, or Drylok. Adding a dehumidifier can help a lot, too, but can be expensive to run if you don't do something about the water ingress.
You can also paint the floor with a concrete sealer. However, if you have any active water leaks, or the walls or floor are damp to the touch, don't do either of these things, and consult a contractor first. You may have a more active water problem than these products are designed to tolerate, and can make matters worse by shifting all the water to a single weak area.
If you have carpet down, remove it. Get rid of any old cardboard boxes, carpet, wood, or anything else that might harbor dust. If something can "get wet" (IE, you wet it down and it still feels wet or soggy - like cardboard, but not like plastic), it will soak up the humidity and provide a growth environment for the molds that create that musty smell.
Get them out of there.
You can spend a ton of money on a million products but you're just going to get seriously frustrated. That was me a year ago-my brother in-law let me borrow his ozone generator to shock treat our basement and it worked...when I say work, I mean WORKED. I hope I can help someone else out-you can get them at ozoneexperts.com/-they're American Made (I'm always looking for american made products).
