I have a dog who is an outside dog. When growing up, we had dogs and they always stayed outside. HE is in a 20X20 kennel with lots of shade and a ventilated igloo.

He has plenty of water. I know it is really hot outside. Does he need to come in the house or will he be okay with what he has outside?

Since he has ventilated igloo and plenty of water, I think Snickers will do good outside your home.

Make sure he has water and shade. That should do. My comments were mainly about winter conditions.

He has plenty of water and lots of shade and his Igloo is ventilated and always cooler than outside of it, but I Think I will go home at lunch and put him in his crate just to be on the safe side...Thanks Gary :) LglSec 5 months ago .

If he has plenty of fresh water a lot of shade and a ventilated shelter he should be good outside, just check on him at lunch, maybe get him a little kiddie wadding pool that he can splash around it. 3-4' diameter would be plenty for the size of his run I detest crating with every fiber of my being. Our dogs were always treated like family, the idea of locking them in a cage is appalling, to me its like locking your kid up on a tiny room because you don't want to deal with their behavior.

Well, I did not know what to do. People think that you are cruel to leave your dog out when it is this hot. I have two cats inside and the cats and the dog hate each other so I cannot trust the dog to run loose in the house for that reason and because he is NOT a house dog.

He was cool as a cucumber when he came out of his igloo, but of course in the heat, he got hot and was panting heavily, so I put him in the crate where he will be for about 4 hours ..I hate that also, but at least he is cool in the house ... thank you for your remarks. WE have put him in the crate at night if it is storming, but he sleeps then. I have had dogs all of my life that were outside dogs that never ever came into the house and they made it just fine.

They would find shade and just lay there until it got cooler and they were happy doggies... LglSec 5 months ago .

Just get him a little wading pool, if he gets too hot he WILL go lay down in it.

He has a wading pool...he does not like water ...unless it is to drink. H won't even step one foot in the pool..I think he thinks it is a bath! LOL LglSec 4 months ago .

Because of the extreme heat we're experiencing I'd bring him inside if at all possible. If you have a crate maybe he'll be comfortable in that, or try the basement if you have one. Even if you can bring him in for a few hours at a time it wil get him some relief.

I will go home at lunch and put him in his crate. He does not like it and I know he will cry and my cats bug him as they hate him, but if ya'll think that would be better, I will do it.. :) Thanks LglSec 5 months ago .

He was upset with me, but he did okay. We had to put him in it when we went to bed also until about 11:00 p.m. LglSec 4 months ago .

It's too bad you couldn't put him in another room, away from the cats. Is that possible? The heat is going to reach around 100 again today, it's hot, but, it does beat snow!

I am going to bring him in when I get home. I could lock the cats in their bathroom, but it is such a small little room, plus Snickers has never been loose in the house ...not sure what he might do LOL LglSec 4 months ago .

It is great that you are a pet owner interested in the well-being of you dog! Having had a dog growing up, one would assume a bond of some sort had emerged.... Now that you live in today's advanced world, you have the ability to care for this living creature as it is part of your life. Knowing that the outdoor temperature is hot (anything over 85 degrees is severe to dogs with any type of fur or hair), your thought to move the dog from outside to inside is a true and valuable concern.

The fact is, dogs are extremely intelligent and very capable of experiencing feelings (example: comfort, anguish, frustration, care, etc. ). The crucial difference between our communication is that dogs (or other animals) will use their physical body (with their body, eyes, or by making noises) to tell you what they need.As a pet owner and as a quality member of society, it is your duty to protect, guide, and care for others in the community. If you have chosen to take the responsibility of owning a dog, basic needs like temp control, plenty of water, and food are only the minimal necessities needed for SURVIVAL.

Like many animals, dogs bring families together through laughter, they brighten your day, they thrive on making you happy, they live for whatever you live for.In return they do need the basics of course:)They need HOURS OF EXERCISE aside and away from their (spacious cages) or main living areas, they will highly benefit from social interaction as well as interaction with their caretaker, and other dogs within 30 lbs of their size, they need to be stimulated, trained, disciplined, and above all loved. Please, please, please, bring your dog inside on hot days.... They count are counting on you! Same with cold days, if it dips below 60 degrees, make a doggy bed or fort for them inside.

Otherwise, what is the point in having them as a pet, they're no longer wild when domesticated, they're no longer strays when loved, they're no longer just animals when family. If Snickers does not like to go inside with you and sit, it may be signs of anxiety or nervousness because they are used to always being outside. As long as you make this a routine, sharing indoor and outdoor time, and doing you best to stay certain on your decision to do so... overtime it will get more comfortable and Snickers will be loyal to you for the years to come.

So glad to hear that Snickers did ok inside and outside with the cats:) Crates are ok for night and having a place of their own to relax and sleep in... however, the idea of "crate training" is widely used to "potty" train dogs within a 4 hour maximum time period -- not to simply -keep- the animal in it's place. This is no way for ANY living creature to live. I am so happy and grateful to people like you who acknowledge these old-fashioned styles and progress into compassion and sensibility.

Have you thought of keeping Snickers on a harness & leash with you (or clipped onto your belt loop) while inside the house? This way, you'd have complete control on behavior training which will make everyone's lives easier:) .

If it's too hot for you it's too hot for him. Tell me, is his outdoor home heated in winter? .

HE has a very expensive top of the line Igloo which is ventilated in the summer and closed in the winter with a small opening in the front that a door attaches to in the winter to keep in the heat ...it would probably do the same with the cool in the summer. I actually crawled in there and it is much cooler inside than outside.. LglSec 4 months ago .

I hope so, because this heat wave is a killer.

Well, because it is so hot the last few days, in the afternoon, I am putting him in his crate in the house ...I think he would be okay because I put icecubes in his water and he has plenty of water and plenty of shade and as I said the igloo is very cool, but it is very hot, so trying to play it safe:) LglSec 4 months ago .

Always a good idea to play it safe, just in case :) .

You really should bring him in. That's just cruel in this heat! .

If the cats bug him in the crate, put him in a room where the cats are not and close the door.

We got Snickers to be an inside and outside dog, however we have two cats, Snickers gets along with cats, I did not know that my cats would not get along with him.... LglSec 4 months ago .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
