The five year-old cat is proving to the new cat on the block, that she rules the roost. Did she ever have any of her own vetwest.com.au/fiv-and-your-cat I’ve put this at the top, reason being, that your kitten is very new to your home. There are roads being built on the topic of "feline immuno viruses" An eight week-old cat has no defense against a five year-old cat--nothing at all really, so you are really going to have to monitor the situation very closely unless you want a dead or seriously injured kitten on your hands.

Another thing that tends to distract them from each other (usually distracts them) is play time. One of those heavy duty, hard plastic; has a stretchy kind of string on it and a bell on the end. That one has really been a hit for most of the cats I’ve owned.

Another one is catnip--don’t put some down only ine spot, but within eysight of the other. Once they begin letting their guard down towards each other, then it should be okay with time. Sleeping kitten gets smelled over by the older cat and vice versa.

Don’t get all too conficant right away, because sooner or later the older cat is going to have to put his paw down and lay a bit of a beating on the younger one--that means I am the boss and don’t be getting too big for your britches. This is unavoidable, but you are going to have to buy some time for the kitten or sure as hell, the other may kill it. Very first suggestion is to place two bowls of water and two bowls of food.

I don’t imagine that your older cat appreciates the newcomer eating from her own plate or bowl. Do not put the kitten’s dishes anywhere near the females bowls or food; preferably out of site as well. The older cat now only knows that the new and younger one is stealing its food; cats are and can be very territorial.

When you are introducing them, it is a good idea to be wearing heavy gloves (welder’s gloves if you can get them) they have gauntlets on them and are made of thick leather; these will protect your hands, wrists and lower arms from being scratched or bitten. From experience, injuries where the skin (yours), has been broken, infection is quite common and can leave a nasty mess of whatever it latches onto. Treatment includes a tetnus & anti-biotics for yourself.

If the wound is deep and dirty, you may be required to have more than one tetnus shot. Try this, bring the young one into a room with the other cat, and close the door; preferraby in the washroom as it is close quarters and they just won’t go running off the minute they see the other animal. You need to stay in there too, so come prepared.

Try sitting the kitten up on the sink and hang onto the older cat, most particularly the front and back claws, they can really go deep and believe me it really hurts, A LOT. The reason for holding the older is to prevent it from attacking the younger one. You give them each a chance to check out the other.

Making them get along, may or may not work. The older cat is definitely "THE BOSS. " It has to teach the kitten just exactly what a boss is, as well what the boss expects from the kitten and the things that the kitten needs to do to meet these requirements of living in your cat’s house--it is the cat’s house within a week of you bringing it there; please, don’t fill yourself up with all these grand illusions that you own that home.

YOUR CAT OWNS IT and you are on borrowed time! The cat at this moment is putting up with you and not the other way around. I really love cats; and I a very hard time to talk myself into including the following links.

What convinced me to do so though, is that you may have children in your home, and I believe that if there is something that can do to prevent that kind of thing, then by all means. From watching..... numerous Barking Mad shows where this British group of vets and animal behaviorists work on different plans. A suggestion: Take a towel and rub on the kitten all over. Place this towel under the dish of your older cat so she will associate the kitten's odor with something pleasant (food).

Do the same rubbing another towel on the older cat and place it under the kitten's food bowl so the kitten gets used to the older cat smell. The growling and hissing is to assert her authority. Just do not project your anxiety or she will attack thinking that it is expected.

I'm on this same predicament as your are. I have an old indoor cat (male 9 years old) and we just got adopted a month and a half ago by a 3 to 5 year old male. This younger one came very hurt, infected and now (after $500 in vet's bills) it has been released by the vet.

All this time we kept the cats separated. The older cat stays mainly in our large second floor and he is very shy and laid back. We tried to find a home for the younger one and we realized that we are it.

Nobody wants him. Introducing them one day was uneventful. The next day the younger attacks (rushed after him, backs arching no contact just a lot of noise).

I walk around with a broom (to separate them if needed) and a spritzy water bottle (we have 4 laying around the house for pet control.... Harmon's $1.49 each). Probably by keeping them separate we are giving them the message to be afraid of each other. I'm tough... I'll see this through.

Maybe having the broom and a spritzy water bottle (my aim improved considerably) will be good weapons for you to carry around. It works for me. Good luck!.

Well first of all having an indoor/outdoor cat is never a good thing. Your kitten will be susceptable to disease, fleas, etc. I have 6 cats all of which are INDOOR only..I want them to live a very long time and outdoor cats have a 8 year life span traditionally. However thats not the uqestion you asked.....all of my cats are rescue cats they were dumped......originally I had two one male one female.

The male died 5 years ago, so we only had my eldest female(she is now 15) so we brought in TWO(not one) it was a pair of 3 month old kittens Buffy & Spike. OMG she went crazy, I mean we wanted them to be company for her, so she wouldn't mourn the loss of the other cat. She growled, she hissed, she peed & pooped on my feather bed(that was lovely) she was furious.....this continued for a few months.....5 years later..her & Spike are inseparable...they are together all the time.

And its made her so young acting..she runs, jumps, plays etc......all at almost 16 years old....Everytime we brought in a new cat.......we had to go through all this...I do one thing when one of the cats goes to the vet..when they come home...none of the cats like them, they hiss & growl....because they know the cat has been outside & they can smell it. It just takes alot of time & patience. Your eldest cat will learn to love the kitten....You didn't say if it was male or female....older female cats are more likely to bond to male kittens.....its a territorial girl thing...with female cats.

Pets are our hairy children. If you bring a new baby into the house where there is a 5-year-old, you must give the 5-year-old even more attention than usual and show her daily that the baby is no threat. There are a lot of ways to prepare a child for a new addition to the family.

Not so for our pets. Of course, Dakota will adjust in time even if you do nothing. But you can help the adjustment along, perhaps holding Dakota while the kitten sits next to you, and then petting the kitten while you are holding Dakota.

You seem to be an intelligent pet owner, so I'm sure Dakota has been spayed. After the new kitten is spayed or neutered, I'm sure the two will get along like best friends. When you least expect it, you will catch Dakota cleaning the newbie.
