I have a friend who has ALS. He has a good support group (friends/family). Help me with ideas to improve his life?
ALS is a difficult disease for family, friends, and the victim, naturally. Brad has a van, bathtub hoist, electric wheelchair, and in a week, a computer comm device. S immediate family (wife, four kids) are terrific as is Brad himself.
There are apparently some issues with his extended family that I am not up to speed on but that may be something to address at another time. I just need to open communication to find out what others have done that were inventive, innovative, effective ways to make Brad's and his familys' life more challenging and fun. Can anyone give me ideas of what can be done to help make Brad's life more fulfilling?

Helping with ALS Caregiving families under these circumstances are sometimes needier than the person with the disease - it may help a lot to spell off the usual caregivers. Prying into family feuds should not be your endeavor. I would ask what your motivation here is - not to answer me, but yourself.
Everyone's life in that situation is challenging enough, I am sure! If you give them all some 'time off' they can put some fun into their lives on their own and even give your friend a change of scenery by your taking a shift. Having been a caregiver, there can be a lot of sensitivity to someone coming on the scene and 'doing the job better'--caregiving is unsung and hard even when love is present.
Supporting the caregivers to me is a big contribution you can make. Hope this helps.
3 My heart goes out to Brad and his family. Of all diseases, it think ALS scares me the most. One idea is to buy him a commode seat that sprays water and warm air so he can continue to clean himself when his hands have failed him.
This will allow him to keep his self esteem a bit longer. They have these at most upscale plumbing places. If you haven't read "Tuesdays with Morrie" I suggest you get it.It might be a bit too real for Brad, but I think you could get some good ideas from it.
You're a dear for wanting to help your friend through the difficult days ahead. I'll keep both of you in my prayers.

4 I have MS but people can't see it...if he can still help someone...then he may feel like his life is worthwhile and productive... helping someone may bring him happiness...

Sweetpeapete replied to post #3: 5 You are very kind to have responded. Brad is a terrific, active, family man. To have these positive traits taken away so suddenly is difficult.
Though I am not sure what Brad or his family do keep him busy, I can be sure that they are exploring many avenues to keep his mind occupied. I am including a website that is a service provided by the Duluth, MN, public library. I haven't tried it yet, but here it is duluth.lib.mn.us .
I am going to try it out now.

Sweetpeapete replied to post #4: 6 Shasha, thanks for your response. Your suggestion is well taken. I know that Brad attends ALS meetings regularly and no doubt gets good first hand advice from those meetings.
Good luck to you Shasha, you have a good heart.

How about ALS?" "A friend asked me this, and I don't have any ideas. Maybe someone here can help. " "family always come before friends but if your friend was there for you before your family should you put them first" "In your experience do mental health experts give you help that you cannot get from family and friends?" "Friends come and go, Think of the last friend that left your life.
Why was it?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
