I have a knitting pattern for a vest that is asymmetrical and you knit it sideways in one piece. Anyone do something like that? Was it easy to follow the directions?

I love patterns like that. For one thing, there is less stitching together at finishing time, always a good thing in my book. Secondly, they look really different, which is cool, and they shake things up a bit for me as a knitter, which I enjoy.
I made a sweater for a friend's baby like that; all in piece on circular needles. I don't recall now, but I think there was only the side seams and I didn't have to worry about attaching sleeves. It turned out very nicely, shoulda taken a photo of it.As for the directions being easy, I think some folks have a gift for making things simple, and they don't always write the patterns.
But you should have no trouble. You have plenty of help here if you encounter a stumbling block. I say go for it, it sounds like it will be an interesting project.
What yarn are you considering? Have fun! It helps me when I get into trouble to have some theory.
Sideways knitting is a fun change of pace... I have knit asymmetrical things, and I have knit sideways things... and I have knit all sorts of things where the directions confused me mightily the first time I read them. I've found that sometimes instructions that make no sense at all when you are reading them over, can suddenly become clear when you have the yarn and needles in your hands. I always tell myself that worst case scenario, I can always pull it out and knit it over until I get it right. My advice would be to go ahead and try to knit through the confusing parts... doing exactly as the pattern tells you.
I have had quite a few "Ah-ha! " revelations while doing just that. Your pattern sounds like it will be just as much fun to wear as it will be to knit.
The nice thing about asymmetrical patterns is that if you don't get everything perfect, it still works out great, and can be very "arty". I like knitting sideways, as it will give you a completely different perspective on garment construction than knitting vertically. You will find that experimenting with alternative techniques improves all of the knitting you do.
Here is Sonnet, one of my all time favorite patterns for a sideways sweater. There is also a child's version called Haiku. Knitty is a wonderful resource for free knitting patterns, and has a handy rating scale to let you know how difficult each pattern is to make.
There are also numerous articles with techniques and tips for knitters of all experience levels. I carry my copy with me in my knitting bag.
It has clear written instructions and pictures of nearly every stitch or technique you'll ever be called on to use.
Yes, I did and Yes, it is I have done some knitting sideways, and I always find it not only a nice change but also easy. It usually means also less sewing together, unless you knit in the round. I have made several sweaters that way, starting at one sleeve and adding stitches for the body, with the opening for the neck, than on to the other URL1 makes for a different look and is a lot easier than you might think.
A vest is a easy project to try that way, since you don't have to deal with sleeves and extra pieces. Try it, you'll like it! Happy knitting.

2 Yes indeed. I have the first edition which features line drawings rather than photographs... which I prefer for this sort of thing. The new version is also very nice, but I've felt no compelling need to replace my old reliable copy.
I do recommend it to all my friends who knit... new knitters especially. Have you compared both editions? Which do you prefer?
