Many school districts require only that you have a high school diploma or a GED to be a substitute teacher. They usually offer short training classes so you can be accustomed to being in a classroom. However, to be a long-term substitute teacher in which you teach in the same class for an extended period of time teacher certification or a college degree (often in any subject) may be necessary.
Since you have a master's degree in ESL and a bachelor's degree in health education and linguistics, you should be qualified and may feel comfortable subbing in language arts classes, health classes, or foreign language classes. Because many schools are short-staffed, you may be invited to sub in any available subjects. Contact individual school systems, because each system has different qualifications and expectations for substitutes.
