I have some Warfarin that expired 3 months ago - is it still safe to take it?

Not if it expired. You take an unncessary risk.

You should look up the history of Warfarin - it is fascinating. The WARF stands for Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, because they get the revenues since it was invented at the U of Wisc. It was originall used as rat poison (in higher doses).

It's a really interesting drug.

All pharmacies put a 1 year expiration date on the bottle. The pills are usually good WAY beyond that, but it releases the pharmacy from liability. If it comes directly from the manufacturer, it will have several years of shelf-life before expiration. So if you're talking about the pharmacy bottle expiration date, it's definitely safe to take.

If you're talking about manufacturer's packaging expiration date, I'd be a little more leery. It might not work as well. Alissa, RN .

The only possible down side to these being expired is they will not be as potent. Other than that you'll be completely fine. NatioN 5 months ago.

Consult your local pharmacist to be sure but my guess is that it is still safe. My brother in law has been a drug rep for years and has told me that most prescription med's start to lose potency after 3-6 months (as a general rule). Here is a link to an article on this topic.

Again, consult your local pharmacist for advice on your specific medication. Shtml.

That should have read: "3-6 months after the expiration date"...

I would never try any medicine past the expiration date.
