I just bought a LG flat screen LCD tv. LH30 42". and I cant get my cable/dvr box to work correctly?

I just bought a LG flat screen LCD tv. LH30 42". And I cant get my cable/dvr box to work correctly.

I plugged the cable into the box then using another cable wire into the tv. Programed the channels and what not. Then tried to use my remote for the cable box and would not work.So I put the tv on channel 3 then tried the box and all I got were wavy lines on the picture but the box worked.

So I tried connecting the cable wire directly to the tv and connect the tv and cable seperately by an HDMI. Turned the HDMI on I can flip through the tv guide and my dvr but I cant get any pictures. How do I get it to work?
