It's pretty decent. Unless you're trying to control the amount of fill flash by bouncing it off the ceiling or walls, the built-in flash should be enough to begin with. It's got a reported range of 42 feet at ISO 100 in manual mode.

If you do need extra power to reach further, or need wide angle flash coverage, go with the SB600 or SB800. Both are nice flashes. The SB800 has a bit more power than the SB600 and a slightly faster recycling time.

The other difference is that the SB600 cannot be used as a commander flash to wirelessly control other slave flashes. The SB800 can function as commander and slave, the SB600 is slave-only. That may not be an issue for you with the SB600 because the D80 can act as commander and wirelessly control an SB600 or SB800 as a slave.

Regardless, stick with a flash that supports i-TTL flash exposure control, otherwise you'll end up having to set the flash exposure yourself instead of the letting the D80 do it. SB-600 or 800 I bought a SB-600 speedlight about a year ago and I use it every time I shoot. The SB-600 rocks, but I wish I had waited and saved and bought a SB-800 with it to use it as a off-camera strobe. Avoid the SB-400 at all costs, it gives you almost no control at all.

Nikon Flash I use a D80 with the 18-200mm lens too. I use an SB400 flash unit. Good news: The SB400 is smaller, cheaper and lighter than the other units.

You can just leave it on the camera most of the time instead of constantly popping it on and off. That works for me because I mostly walk around shooting candids, scenery and wildlife rather than tripod set shots or studio work. Bad news: The SB400 is not nearly as versatile or sophisticated as the bigger, heavier and more expensive SB600 or SB800.

You really need to look at the specs on all three and decide which one fits your, budget, aching back and shooting style. And the earning curve on the bigger units ain't like dustin' crops back on Tatooine. Depends on your needs It's hard to suggest a specific flash without knowing what it will be used for. In general, the most powerful, versatile and Nikon friendly flash would be the best solution (the SB-800). But if you don't need all of it's functions, (or can't afford it) then you could look to an older Nikon flash.

The SB-600 is a very nice flash. If you'd like something even more affordable, I'd suggest the SB-28 or SB-26. Both are available (used) for under $100 usually, and are made by Nikon, so CLS works with them.

You can use them either on-camera or off-camera, using the Commander mode on your D80. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
