Make your reservations as soon as possible. My family and I are also going away during the holidays and as I was struggling on Wednesday to find us the best fare, my husband preceded to read me an article from the Wall Street Journal. The article pretty much said that those who booked early, at least by September, have been able to secure the best fares for holiday travel.

The article went on to say do not delay in making your reservations because you will only end up paying more. Various sources were quoted in the article but I honestly don’t recall them now. .

I had taken care of our hotel reservations months ago but I had procrastinated on making our airline reservations and we were now going to pay the price for that. Even while I was checking and deciding what would be best for us, one of the options I was considering went up $30 per person. Why am I telling you all this?

So you know you need to book right away and that you will probably be sitting next to someone on the plane who got a better fare than you but on the upside there is a chance you’ll do better than someone else. * So what should you do. Start by looking at Orbitz, Expedia or Travelocity.

I personally prefer Orbitz. Orbitz is an excellent travel tools but that is where it should end; you would be better to book directly with the airline. From Orbitz you will get an idea of what the range of fares are out there but book with the airline.

When you purchase a non-refundable fare from Orbitz (or the others) they will impose a booking fee and additionally if you make changes they will charge a fee unless you make the changes online. Keep in mind; these travel sites do not show fares for Southwest and some other discount airlines. Farecast is a great travel resource and you might find it helpful as well.

* The fare for travel on Friday/Saturday/Sunday can sometimes be higher so if you can be flexible with your dates you might improve on your fare. Some airlines, such as United, have a way to check for the best fare by using a flexible date option. Also check if it is cheaper to fly out one airline and return on another.

I was able to save us some money by having us depart on Southwest and return on American. * If all else fails, there is of course Priceline where you "bid" but keep in mind you will not know what your flights are until after your bid has been accepted. I personally like doing the picking of my flights but perhaps this will work for you.

If you do go the Priceline route you will want to have done your homework first so you have a feel for what you want to bid. * I hope this information helps you. Good luck with your travel plans.

If your travel plans are flexible... You can get some awesome deals on Hotwire.com. You are unable to choose specific airlines or even specific times that you depart/arrive, but if these things do not matter for your travel plans, I'd recommend it! If you do need more exact times (i.e.

, mom can only pick up up in the afternoon, etc. ) I would recommend flying on Tuesday or Wednesday and include a weekend stay...however with Christmas falling on a Tuesday that might not be convenient for you. In this case, you might try flying out on Monday and returning on Thursday or Friday...this may shorten your trip, but will probably cost you less. Most airlines will let you search for flights, searching for 1 day before or after a select date to see if it might be cheaper to fly on those days... Also, another tip is to search on a major travel site, like, travel.yahoo.

Com, BUT don't buy from there! Once you find the cheapest airline, go directly to that airline's website...this will save you the $5-10 fee that Yahoo!Charges. Hope this helps and you have a wonderful holiday!

The earlier the better Your two options for getting good airfares are to buy as early as possible, especially if you see a sale on, or to wait until the last minute and hope the plane is almost empty. During the holidays, the planes will all be full. Even at this time a couple of months early you'll be lucky to have much selection.

I suggest booking immediately. Waiting until the last minute is not a great option at the busy travel times, the way the airlines work is on a sophisticated computer model. They first estimate the demand for seats at that time, and set the initial price accordingly, about a year in advance.

They then adjust that moment to moment as seats are sold. If the computer detects seats selling quickly, it will raise the price in an attempt to make more money off of the remaining seats. If the computer detects slow sales it will drop the prices somewhat. As you reach an intermediate time to departure, say about 1 month to 1 week, you will see the greatest prices on the remaining tickets.

At about 1 week out, if the computer sees many seats remaining, it will drop the price as they would rather have the seats filled at cost than have them empty and take a loss on them. This is a very basic description that leaves out many factors that will affect price, but gives you the general idea of why you either buy very early, or gamble on leaving it late. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
