According to various legends, myths and old wives tales; the left hand is associated with Satanism or evil. Many years ago if a child began using the left hand for eating, writing, etc. The parent would promptly sway the child to use the right hand for fear of being singled out as sorcerers or Satanic followers. According to some of my older family members it was just "bad" to have a left handed child and the switch was encouraged.
They gave no definite reason for the "bad". Then as time progressed parents decided that being left-handed was just odd and inconvenient because the world is designed for right handed people. In reading about family crests, meanings, symbols I cam to the conclusion that most family crests were created to identify the individual who designed it. The crest was passed down through generations and whatever legend that was associated with it was handed down through each generation also.
If your ancestors were not of the "NORM" then perhaps the towns people made them to feel outcast and created the "EVIL" symbol to scare away unwanted attention or to put a fear into the people. I think you will find the opinions on this subject to be varied from serious to humorous depending on who you ask. If you personally feel there is more to this than you can decipher on your own, then perhaps you should take a trip to your local library and consult with someone who works in genealogy studies.
As for me... I intend to spin my own tale of what my family crest represents and have fun with it! Best of luck with yours.
In heraldry leftward is termed sinister and rightward is termed dexter. There is a good page on Wikipedia see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinister_(heraldry) which explain how right side was considered honorable, peaceful.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
