I tend to think makeover shows are very annoying...but I can "see" the appeal for them... Although makeover shows aren't my cup of tea, I know a lot of people who really like them. I guess if I HAD to watch one, it would be a home makeover show over one that makes over a person. I just find that the home makeover/design shows are a little more positive.

The designers/hosts are more uplifting & everyone seems to get into the project and have a good time. On the personal style makeover shows, it seems to me that the stylists/hosts tear the person down & borderline humiliate them on national tv only to "build" them back up with hair, makeup & clothes. I do believe that these things can give you confidence, and it's important to take good care of yourself and put your best image forward.

Your exterior image should reflect your interior and you should have pride in yourself! But why can't the hosts of these shows be more nurturing and respectful? Of course I don't know much about these shows since I don't really watch. So what is your opinion?

In my opinion, no, I wouldn't go on a makeover show I agree with you, it is in their interest to make the person look as bad as possible to start with, that way the transformation is more dramatic. Sources: my opinion .

Thank God. I thought I was the only one! If I ever watch a makeover show, it's definitely a house being made over - even then, I'm reluctant to watch.

Someone will wind up humiliated in the process and that's not my idea of must-see TV! I often wonder why someone would find this a good experience, though I am sure that for some, maybe it is the kick in the pants that they need to move forward in life. To others, my God.

They are just shredded! Let's just pick on their clothes, teeth, glasses, hair, whatever! Fair game, we'll just make them pretty and fix everything!

I wonder though, the shows that make them throw away all their clothes, how much of a wardrobe do they leave with, 5 outfits? Sure, that maybe better quality clothes than they are used to owning, but is it practical? Doubtful.

I have the means to be able to buy better clothes but can't stand the thought of spending obscene amounts just for the label! I shop around and look for things. I've never been one for conspicuous consumption.

I feel that if I walk in and someone can rattle off the labels of everything I have one (had this done one too many time! ) then I have spent FAR too much! The people on these shows, most of them will say they would never be able to purchase what has been purchased for them.

What about the men and women that have veneers put on their teeth? These are not maintenance free things and in about 10 years, they need upgrading. Plastic surgery, too.

Sure, that botox or water they are injecting will make them look *refreshed* and fabulous, but tell me how they can maintain it? Again, these things have upkeep fees! If they help a women get breast implants, do you hear them talk to the patient about the fact they they will need to replace the implants down the road?

That surgery is several thousands of dollars! I love when they add hair extensions, a weave or whatever they call them. They don't last forever and may require professional help to remove - again.

Who the heck pays for that appointment? I could go on and on, but I won't. I will make my blood boil.

I just don't see these shows as entertainment. I do often wonder about the longterm ramifications of such things, but will admit that for some, it could be a positive thing - for others, I'm betting they found a bit more pain in the process than they will ever admit! OK, I have to go back to my reaction to one of the first makeover shows... when Queer Eye for the Straight Guy came on I was entranced! I watched it all the time. Until one day I was watching them tear into some guy's bedroom going "Wow, look at that mess!

It looks like every stray item in the house was hidden in their bedroom! " That is when the lightening bolt hit. Of course, I had painted, rearranged, and bought special items for every room in my house...except my bedroom, where every odd and end went to hide!

Uh, oh, I resembled that remark! So I finally decided it was time to fire the pack rat who kept taking things to my room (me), paint, decorate, and organize. Then I could relax, make fun of other people's mess, and enjoy the show again!

I do watch the What Not to Wear show, even though they do tend to humiliate the guest before they give them $5000 and make them over. I watch it with my teens so they see that there comes a time when what is fashionable in high school has to change...growing up means changing what you wear to suit where and when you are. So they understand what people are thinking when they define themselves by wearing something really odd (like the grown woman who wore a raccoon tail on her ass all the time...OMG)!

Now when they try to leave the house wearing clothes that aren't suitable to where they are going, I ask them what they think Stacey and Clinton will say when they show the secret footage I am filming today! Generally, I would agree that there is usually a positive way to urge people to update their exterior to match their interior...but sometimes you just have to be struck by lightening to see the light. Change is hard.My kids don't get to watch much TV but I make an exception for Extreme Home Makeover.

The whole Cinderella event for people who need help, the fact that it shows people who can together make a big difference, and the example of reaching out is the kind of message I want for my kids. They love that show and usually cry at some point.
