Sometimes it doesn't read your SIM the first time. Use a pin to pop-out the SIM card, and re-insert it... I have to do it several times on my 3G (jailbroken) before its read properly.
Honestly, I would take your iPhone to the Apple store or call AppleCare 1-800-APL-CARE Or a corporate AT&T store. Sounds like you may need a new SIM. Also assuming this is the SIM card that came with the iPhone.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
