All these things you have to think about, a dog is a 15 year commitment. German Shepherds in my opinion are ace. They are great protectors while being the sweetest dogs ever.
They have that inner maternal instinct and are fabulous with children. If you are looking for a smaller dog, Mixed breeds are a good idea.. They are more even tempered than most small dogs, less high-maintance and stubborn. But honestly, Follow your heart and pick the one who tugs at your heart strings, the one you just can leave without.. Also consider looking for a dog from a shelter.. You would have a better chance of knowing the dogs personality before hand and seeing if you two would be compatible.

Australian Shepards are loving loyal and fun dogs, They are medium sized dogs. They are known as high energy but many are content to sit on the couch and watch a movie as long as you have one hand resting on their head or back. They are very intelligent dogs and great with children.
