I want to put down a hardwood floor next to an existing hardwood floor. What do I do about the color?

When you buy the new floor ask what your options are. Usually you refinish the old floor to match the new or buy what will match the old or just accept that some will be different.

Use the same species, with a different finish. Go for high contrast. Because you probably cannot 100% match, look for something that will complement.

Or go for a different species all together, so that the design is a "deliberate decision", and will not look like a mistake. Never try to put a laminated wood ("Pergo" or similar) floor next to real hardwood - it will look extremely fake. Best wishes!

I had a section of golden oak in my hall, downstairs 1/2 bath, foyer and dining room. I changed the foyer to tile and laid down what was a fairly lighter "natural" oak floor in the kitchen, living room and staircase, all connecting to the existing wood floor in the hall. I planned to have the old wood floor screened, stained and revarnished the following year.

Instead, the new oak floor oxidized within a short period of time, and ended up matching the old oak floor virtually perfectly.

Keep it as is it will be unusuall but creative and it will bring out everything else. It will look good.

A professional floor installer can certainly do this. I live in a house that is almost 70 years old and has the original hardwood oak floors. We had an addition built on to the house a few years old and I told the contractor that I wanted the new floors to blend like they were always there.

He told me the old oak floors are "red Oak". He installed raw oak hardwood floors going in the same direction, sanded and three coats of poly. The job took about a week but you would never be able to tell where the old floors stopped and the new floors start.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
