If a child commits a hate crime, should the parents be put on trial?

There are always exceptions to the rule, so to speak, but in general I say no. Also, to me the heinousness of the crime should determine the punishment, not that it was a "hate" crime. How can "hate" be measured.

But if you were one of the guys that tied Matthew Shepard to a barbed wire fence and left him there to slowly die for 5 days, then IMHO, it doesn't matter that they did it because he was gay, but it was so exceptionally cruel that it should, again IMHO, be severely punished because of that.

Well, there's the argument about whether we learn our predjudices in the home or with the company we keep. I think the child should be re-educated. In New York, there was vandalism against a Jewish synagogue with Nazi swaztikas painted all over the property by teenagers.

They were caught. As part of their punishment, the Rabbi arranged to have them take classes about the Holocaust. In this case, the teens were pretty good kids, and were ashamed of their behavior after learning about what the Nazis did to Jews during WWII, and using that sign was a symbol of religious hatred.It was a lesson well learned and they vowed they wouldn't do that again.

The parent, by the way, approved of it. Many times, it's just ignorance and emulating what you see around you. Teach them to think for themselves.

I do have a problem with the children of the KKK. They teach these kids hatred as soon as they are able to speak. Can we put the parents on trial, thus, the KKK?

Yes. Lack of history knowledge is another contributing factor to repeating hate. These kids probably don't know what xenophobia means either.

It is definitely a good idea to find out where they camy by such notions; and if it is determined that the parents are brainwashing them into such attitudes; then it would be best to do something about that.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
