If I were to do only one thing in Hong Kong as a visitor, what should it be?

Take the Star Ferry - and buy a Dairy Farm ice cream for the trip. Go first class - second class is just noisier. You get to see the island / mainland from the water, which puts the place in perspective: a busy, busy port with a small mountainous island on one side and a flat vista on the mainland.

You get the sounds, the sights and the smells of the place. But how could you limit yourself to only one thing when there is so much on offer? If you can do more than just one thing: Go to Aberdeen to one of the floating restaurants and pick your dinner off one of the fishing boats as they bring in their catch.

Go shopping in the markets in Central or Stanley Markets on the other side of the island - everyone is an entrepreneur in HK and there are tiny stalls in every nook and cranny. You can buy the big-label stuff anywhere in the world but the buzz in the markets is special to HK. Go up to the Peak, and watch the sun set.

And if you can find the time, go to Lantau island and see the monastery. It is winter there, so check the temperatures and dress warm - it gets colder than you might think for a tropical place. Wear good walking shoes, too - your feet will thank you.

1 kanga, great suggestion! Much better than the standard "touristy" suggestion. I definitely second taking the ferry.

Even more, try the myriad of public transportation when you hop between stops: trams, double-decker buses, mini-buses...

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
