If you read the Gospels without all the protective gear Christians use, you'll see why. Jesus taught a bankrupt morality based on punishment and reward. Why be good?
So God will reward you. Why love your neighbor? Because God says so.
Why help strangers? Because if you do, Jesus will reward you, and if you don't, Jesus will send you to what he calls "eternal punishment". He never mentioned compassion as our motivation, and when he talked about reward (which he did a lot), he never mentioned that being compassionate is its own reward.
Even when he discussed charity, he made it all about you, the giver, and your relationship to God. The needy are incidental. You can't expect much from followers of Jesus.
Except for the ones that make up stories about him being some kind of compassionate peacenik hippie. And such stories are necessarily fabricated, because that guy is nowhere to be found in the bible.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
