I've thought of this before, since I'm a novelist and a couple of my books would make good screenplays. Generally speaking, though, the industry doesn't want the author to do the adaptation. I think part of this is because people are too tied to their work, you know?
What an author thinks is important in a story might not be what works best for the screenplay. Also, the skillset needed to write a novel is vastly different from the skills needed to write a screenplay. A screenplay requires more description and relies almost solely on dialogue and facial expression whereas a novel depends on the descriptive text, dialogue only when it furthers the plot.
One is all about showing and not telling and the writing of the other one is all about how to show what is shown. I've been hired to write adaptations of novels before... but I much prefer writing novels. I'm way too verbose to narrow it all down to just the dialogue and still make it compelling.
I put way too much detail into the scripts I write and frequently have to edit and whittle it down.
Absolutely not. The book is my baby; my product, if you will. The screen guys can do the movie work.In my opinion, it would be more interesting to see what "they" did with my work than for me to be involved with the project.
Give me a bag of popcorn and a soda, because I'm about to enjoy the movie I "wrote". :).
Absolutely or at least hire someone who read my book and understood the concepts I was trying to convey. I think Tim Burton would do really well with some of the stories swimming in my head ;).
Absolutely! In fact I've been considering turning my novel into a screenplay. I love writing dialogue and I've been told my writing is not descriptive enough which is as Michy the skills needed to write a screenplay.
:).
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
