I have read your questions about Afrotc in the past but I don't remember if I have answered any. Are people saying this about enlisting or about college and Afrotc. If only the former, then probably because they think you are college material and are throwing away an opportunity for a college education.
From what I recall, you are in California and probably qualify for an essentially free education at a public university through Cal Grant, Blue and Gold etc http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/ad... http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=1122 http://www.calgrants.org/index.cfm?navId... UC's are supposed to start offering grant type financial aid for students from families making between $80,000 and $140,000. If you don't qualify for Cal Grant, Blue and Gold etc Afrotc used to offer all Cadets at Detachments that are HBCU and HHE an Afrotc Type 2 scholarship on a non competitve basis. Fresno State has a Detachment and is HHE and I think there is another Cal State so classified with a Detachment on campus.
Not sure if this is still taking place as they have been revising their scholarship programs. Call the Detachment at Fresno State and ask. One issue with Fresno State is the overall grades are rather low which is true for many Csu campuses and this can affect chances in Afrotc for selection for a field training slot and also for ranking on the national OML which affects chances at a Pilot Slot and other Afsc's.
Compare Fresno State grades to UC and private universities: www.gradeinflation.com If a guy qualifies for Blue and Gold and Cal Grant, then he also qualifies for private financial aid awarded based on the CSS Profile at private colleges. Might want to consider a community college for a year and then transferring to a 4 year private college like Saint Mary's that has Afrotc available at Berkeley or Loyloa that has Afrotc right on campus. Would also likely get most of your education paid for by transferring to USC which also offers Afrotc on campus.
At well endowed private universities, the cost of the education has no relation to the advertised sticker price but the expected family contribution. For instance at Harvard,Yale, Stanford etc, the expected family contribution for a guy from a family making less than $70,000 per year is zero. It is definitely possible to date in the military.
Young, single officers are considered prime dating material by many girls. Most people in the Air Force are not around aircaft and those who are often may wish they were not as they can be working on them outdoors in frigid cold or searing heat. If you want to be in a military environment and have not yet applied to colleges but have taken the Sat or Act, Cal Maritime is still accepting applications for the Fall in two majors.
Can do Afrotc at Berkeley. http://www.csum.edu/web/admissions/military-options http://airforcerotc.berkeley.edu/_afrotc-program.htm Helpful to read all Faq under each tab, Scholarships, College Life etc: http://afrotc.com/help-center/faqs Informative: http://www.afrotc.ku.edu/Recruiting_Presentation_2011.pptx If you commissioned through Afrotc without a scholarship as most do and then served at least three years as an officer, this would allow the post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to pay for a graduate or professional school education. All UC's except Berkeley and UCLA offer TAG(guaranteed transfers) to California Community College students.
http://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/prospective/TAGLetter.asp UCLA has the Transfer Alliance: http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/adm_cco/tap.htm Berkeley: http://students.berkeley.edu/files/Admissions/12626_5.Info_TransAdm.pdf.
I was active duty AF for 8 years, and my time in afforded me opportunities and growth I would never had been able to have had I not joined. I put my time in and as my compensation, I earned free college and my time in service looks great on my resume. And, those in the AF are NOT looked upon as 'weak'!
We play a role, which is just as important as what the Marines, Navy, or Army do. And, yes, you'll have time to have fun. While in Basic, no.
It will be limited in your technical school...but once you are at your permanent duty station, you'll most likely have a typical "9 to 5" (hours will vary) job where you'll go in, do your job, and go home and your off time is your time. Certain things you'll need to get permission for, like traveling outside of a certain mileage radius without taking leave, jumping out of plane for fun, etc, but for the most part your time off is your time off--believe me, there will be plenty of time for drinking and partying! :-) And, yes, you can date while in the military.
Just, please, don't be an idiot and run off to get married. The military has such a high divorce rate 'cause people are missing home and they just want to be with someone and they get married quickly because of this. Or, they are getting orders to someplace and get married so the person they are dating can go with them...just be smart about it!
I joined when I was 19 and got out when I was 26. I then used my GI Bill to pay for my Bachelor's degree, so yes, you can go to college. In fact, if your job allows you to, you may be able to go to college while you are still in the AF and not even touch your GI Bill--you can get details on that once you are at your permanent duty station.
Make sure when you leave for Basic you already have a GUARANTEED job! So, for example if you want to go into the medical field, make sure you have a specific job waiting for you. Finally, when I was 19 my stepdad didn't think I should join the AF either because I didn't know the first thing about the military or the job I had signed up for.
Good thing I didn't listen to him! Good luck!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
