You need to change the orifi It sounds like too much heat is now coming up and you're simply leaving a black residue on your pans from the flame being too high. So you really need to change the orifi. This is what Bob Villa says on the subject:There is 2.6 times the heat output of natural gas in LP gas, to the orifi need to be much smaller holes.

LP gas is regulated at the LP tank. Natural gas is regulated at the gas valve. Some LP appliances also use a gas pressure regulator at the stove.

You need to find what the manufacturer intended to do with this particular appliance and use the correct parts. If you do otherwise, the appliance ratings do not apply. ****Natural gas orifi are too large for propane and propane gas appliances run at higher pressures, so the orifi are changed.

Natural gas regulator is blocked open, and a propane regulator is added at the tank. However, check with the burner manufacturer. If they have a kit with conversion labels, then conversion might be approved, otherwise any accident due to unauthorized conversion is a code violation, insurance headache, and a possible criminal neglect case.

2 It sounds like you survived and I hope you didn't suffer any injury or damages. I guess you've learned your lesson. :) Changing the orifi shouldn't be too tough or expensive but it's something you've got to do.
