After the anime's you have watched, Dragon Ball Z may feel a little one-dimensional. Dragon Ball is great. It's focused on adventure and humor and meeting new friends and foes as well as well-choreographed fight scenes.
Akira Toriyama meant for the series to end after Dragon Ball- this may be the reason why all the creativity was sapped out of the series. So I do recommend watching Dragon Ball, see if you enjoy it and continue on to Dragon Ball Z if you'd like to. On an unrelated note a highly recommend you watching One Piece.

I would definitely recommend watching DBZ Kai (yes Kai). It gets rid of fillers basically. If you like fillers, then I have no hope for you jk.
Other good anime series you would like are Hunterxhunter (the newest remake that is still being released), Code Geass (you should watch this first, the whole thing is an epic two seasons), Death Note (not action oriented, but it's almost universally loved), Gash (Zatch) Bell, Inuyasha, Shaman King, and maybe Escaflowne.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
