The lyrics are here in this link. I looked for the lyrics that mentioned ships sailing out to sea. So far all I could find was the original lyrics which make no mention of ships.

This link and the others that I checked out does say that people often thought that it was about a young man going off to war. But the lyrics written by Frederic Wheatherly make no mention of Ships,war or bloodshed. It's about a young man leaving home.
