I'm looking for new board games heavy on social interaction and/or trading mechanics My love of this subset started with the trading phase of the old Avalon ll version of Civilization which, I found, was by far the most fun I had while playing the game. I've played Modern Art and Fantasy Business and enjoyed both. Those would both be good examples of the type of game I'm looking for.(Though Fantasy Business has fairly severe balance issues...)Play time should be less than 4 hours if possible.

Go to a game store... You probably have a game store in town somewhere.... and I bet they can help you A LOT on this quest. Trading games are popular only in certain circles and the best games are hard to know about unless you are OBSESSED with the genre... or paid to know them;) Use google maps and find out. Settlers of Catan is a good board game that involves trading mechanics,... with expansion packs you can probably have VERY long games... but with 4 people and the basic kit, it ranges about 45min to 2 hours or so... once you get the hang of it.
The game can be as simple or complicated as you want. Its a good place to start. If you want to check out different types of trading games for cheap, try buying from Cheapass Games.
They are EXTREMELY cheap (you buy some dice, some different colored playing pieces and a deck of cards to "start out", then you buy a Cheapass Game which is the rules, gameplay, a gameboard and whatever added pieces you might need. This keeps cost WAY down, they are funny themes/names, AND they copy the gameplay of every big-name board game out there for 1/4th of the price) In town, a couple game stores sell them... or, as you can see, you can buy online. A great thing about visiting your local game store is that the person will probably be able to explain every games mechanics and strategy to you before you invest in a $25-$40 game.
Good luck.
Settlers of Catan Look for Settlers of Catan (link below). This game is fun, easy to learn, and very entertaining with a group. The mechanics are based entirely on production and trade; no combat!.
Try "anno 1701" Anno 1701, also marketed as 1701 A.D. , is a game with both real time strategy and city building elements, developed by Germany-based Sunflowers Interactive Entertainment Software company. It revolves around building and maintaining an 18th century colony in the "New World". It is the sequel to the games Anno 1503 and Anno 1602In my opinion this is very good game!
You can read detailed review herestrategyinformer.com/pc/anno1701/review.... playing the game! Sources: My opinion .
1 This game sounds interesting and I may very well try it but I was looking specifically for board games.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
