I've been a vegetarian for over 18 years, so my first tip would just not become a vegan. It's easier to be a vegetarian, and still have dairy products. My other tip would be to eat tofu products, and don't feel ashamed about it.
There are a lot of great meat substitutes, and you don't need meat to be happy. Also, try some soy products as well.
Read the labels on everything! Gelatin is in so many things and is derived from animals so that rules out most candy, medicines, even things like ready made spreads for crackers/veggies. My best advise is to remember that humans are animals just like any other and we can't avoid killing to survive.
Every animal eats living things if you think of plants as living. Even blinking kills bacteria and it's only the tip of the iceberg. If you are becoming a vegetarian for ethical reasons, you will make mistakes and feel bad about it.
Don't let it get you down. Meat eaters are, in general, not so helpful to the veg-head. They do things like tell you the Pho is vegetarian.
Then after you have been eating there for months, a different waiter will tell you it's beef broth and always has been. They don't mean any harm, they just don't sympathize with vegetarianism so they don't really understand it. Read labels, ask questions when eating out, and make friends with soy, field roast and other meat alternatives.
Good luck and welcome to the club!
4th generation vegetarian here. I switched to soymilk (Silk brand, Very Vanilla) because dairy milk was causing problems a few years ago. I also switched to white cheese (avoiding yellow or aged cheeses) and found them easier on my system.
I grew up on TVP (textured vegetable protien, see link below), abhor Tofu and avoid "grain burgers" like the Gardenburgers whenever possible (but they're edible in a pinch). I also use thinner layers of peanut butter than I did when I was younger, just for the flavor. If you were a meat eater before, you may need to take supplements for a while to make the transition without cravings or other ill effects.
Check with a dietician who has experience with people transitioning their diets away from animal protien.
I was a vegetarian for 10 years until I got pregnant with my daughter... Pregnancy screwed everything up and made me have these weird cravings for all kinds of meat. Blah! Anyway, these are a list of foods I lived off of that are absolutely delicious!1.
Morning Star black bean burgers and chik'n nuggets. 2. Veggie Patch's jalapeno cheddar meatless sausage (my favorite!
They also make a sun dried tomato and basil meatless sausage) 3. Amy's food products. I love her breakfast burritos.4.
Veggie Slices for my morning star burgers, even though I'm not vegan. I love ice cream too much.5. Also, I took a daily multivitamin for some of the nutrients that I wasn't getting and I would normally get them from eating meat at least once a day.
I took "One a Day Women's". Just take a good look at what you plan to be eating, read the content of the package to see what's already in it then just supplement the stuff you won't get during the day with a nice juicy vitamin.
I totally disagree with the comment above. Being a vegan is a really easy freeing way of life. I love it!
I have never had such a wide variety of food, when you cut out meat, dairy & eggs, you actually find yourself trying so many more plant foods that you had never thought of before. You've made a great step by becoming vegetarian, but don't stop there! By drinking milk, you are still supporting the veal industry, and furthermore, the cow's milk & chicken's egg industries are also horrific & contribute to an enormous amount of suffering.
Congratulations on going vegetarian! I hope you are inspired to try many new plant foods & I hope there is no limit to your new compassionate way of life!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
