In a country that promotes freedom of religion, do you think a Mormon can be elected?

This is a question that comes up on the news a lot since Mitt Romney is doing well in the polls. We profess to believe in freedom of religion but do we really practice what we preach on this issue? Does Mitt have a chance?

And if not, is it because of his religious beliefs? Asked by tomdei 53 months ago Similar questions: country promotes freedom religion Mormon elected Society > Religion & Spirituality.

S electability has nothing to do with freedom of religion Freedom of religion means that we allow people to practice any religion they like, and that there is not a single government sponsored religion. It does not mean that we treat every religion the same, or that we are forced to appreciate all religions equally. Each person is allowed to have their own view on religion in general, and on specific religions and those who practice them.

Besides, part of the fact that we have freedom of religion means that religion does not have to be a deciding factor in an election. Some people may vote for a candidate based on his or her religious beliefs, but many people will make that a low priority. Candidates are also welcome to make their faith more or less important in their campaign.

I know that Edwards has said that while he is religious, he does not feel that it is the President's place to impose his religion on the country. I do not know yet how Romney would address that idea, if he chooses to tell us at all. Whatever his religious beliefs though, his electability will depend on many different factors - of which, religion is only one..

They asked the same question in 1960 when John F. Kennedy was running for President, can a Catholic be elected President? The LDS church seems to have a reputation as being a cult even though it isn't and is the fastest-growing religion in the US.

If Mitt Romney wants to stand any type of chance, he needs to go about educating the religious right in the Republican Party and those people tend to be somewhat closed-minded fundamentalists. But, if Kennedy could win them over, why couldn't Romney? Make no mistake about it, it will be an uphill battle for him all the way.

But, it probably makes no difference, since thanks to the current administration's mistakes and screw-ups, not to mention the war in Iraq, a Democrat is almost certain to be elected. Whoever the Republicans nominate is almost certain to be the proverbial sacrificial lamb in 2008..

Great question No easy answer to this one. One would have to ask one self, would he follow his religion or our constitution. Mormons are like the rest of us, some are very fanatical, others, quite liberal.

I have Mormon friends that smoke and drink, but are still good people. Romney appears at least to me, to be the fanatical kind, that type scares me personally, doesn’t matter what his or her religion is. Electable?

Don’t think so.

YES... BUT I draw the line just above MUSLIMS etc.

I do not feel Mormons are Christian. They offer the King James versions of the Bible on TV , but seldom use it. At least my experience.

I think New Age thinking,is very similar to Mormonism ,if you get deep enough into New Age. The book: The Secret, sold very well. I think if people get into New age, they may feel Mormonism is normal and they would not have a problem electing anyone from that group.

I think the born again Christians who liked Pres. Bush maybe disillusioned and they may not trust someone who says they are a certain religion again. We say we are a Christian nation, yet there are no traffic jams going to church or people really living out their faith much.

Real Christians cannot keep their beliefs out of their job. I think people will elect a person who is confident, smart, has knowledge, smiles, and makes them feel secure. I think religion would come second to them being a good person and being capable of doing a good job.

I think being a strange religion would not work. I think people would like a Christian, since it represents good things usually. I think people want someone who is not strongly one way or the other in views..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
