Well, you only get experience points if you answer, not when you ask When you ask a question, you don't earn any experience points. You do earn questcoins (1 when you ask the question, 1 for each answer you rate), but your questcoins aren't tied to any topic. When you're the question answerer, you earn the full amount of experience points in each topic. So, for example, if I earn a "good" score on this answer, I get 5 experience points.

I actually end up with 20, though...5 experience points in topics, 5 in askville, 5 in amazon, and 5 in answers. This makes sense, in a way. The experience points are supposed to convey how experienced (and therefore, how "trustworthy", to a certain extent) a person's answers are.

If they divided the experience points between all the topics, it would result in some oddities. For example, a "Good" answer in a question with 5 topics would earn only 1 experience point per topic, where a "Good" answer in a question with 2 topics would earn 2.5 experience points per topic. You can see that people would be more hesitant to answer question with many topics...their experience would get spread too thin.

But, it's in the best interest of the community for people to categorize their questions fully and appropriately, especially with the way the "search" function is set up. Dividing experience points would also take some of the sting out of "Weak" and "Awful" answers. Say you earned a "Weak" on a question with 6 topics.

You'd only lose 0.83 experience points per topic. Not much of a penalty. However the way it's set up now where you lose 5 points per topic, that's a good deterrent against writing a poor answer.

Here's a link to the Askville FAQ about experience points. Not that it answers your question (it doesn't say anything about experience points being earned per topic or per question), but it does have a chart of the experience points for each final rating. You ask in your question about earning coins...I'm guessing you meant experience points.

However, if I'm wrong, let me include an answer about earning coins. You earn a set number of coins per question, regardless of number of topics. So, a good score (assuming you are Level 0 experience and have no coin multiplier) will earn you 5 questcoins, regardless of how many topics were added to the question. Something interesting about the questcoins, though, is that you begin to earn bonus coins once you level up in a topic (1 bonus coin for good or great answer in a Level 1 topic, 5 bonus coins for a good or great in a Level 2 topic, etc. The entire chart is in the FAQ linked above).

When you answer a question, you get the bonus based on the topic in which you have the highest experience level. So, for example, in your question, you included topics: "TOPICS", "ASKVILLE", "AMAZON", and "ANSWERS". Let's say someone answers who is a Level 2 in ASKVILLE, Level 1 in AMAZON, and Level 0 in the other two topics.

If they scored a good or great on this answer, they would get a coin bonus of 5 based on their Level 2 in ASKVILLE. Hope this helps! Sources: Askville FAQ, and my experience .

No points for asking, but points for all original topics when answering Question askers don't gain any experience points in the topics of the question. Their only gain is in Quest Coins: 1 for asking the question, and 1 for each vote they cast on an answer. Well, that, and they get the answers they were looking for!

:-) Question answerers gain experience points in all of the topics that the question asker originally labeled the question with. Some questions may be tagged with additional topics by other users, for assistance in searching. For example, an asker might label their question with only "dog behavior" and "dog tricks", but someone else may come along and add the tag "dogs" so that people who search for questions about "dogs" will find that question. In this example, an answerer who got a "Good" rating would get 5 points in "dog behavior" and 5 points in "dog tricks", but they wouldn't get any points in "dogs".

The award of Coins is different than Expreince Points. First the person that asks the question gets the same number of coins (1) no mater how many topics are added to the question. They also get a coin for each answer they rate (vote on) for a total of 6 possible points per question asked.

Next the people that answer that question get coins and experience points for their answers. They get one alotment of coins for each question, but they get experience points in each topic that the asker includes in the question. Topics that appear in italics don't count for experience points as they are added to the topic by other members so that the question can be found by the most number of members.

Coin bonuses are for 'best' topic Coins are not directly tied to topics. You do not get coins "in" a certain topic. You get experience points in a given topic, however.

When computing how many bonus coins you should get, Askville uses the topic for which you have the highest Level. So if a question is in the topics movies, entertainment, and cars, and you are Level 2 in entertainment, level 1 in cars, and level 0 in movies, you will get the bonus coins associated with Level 2. Experience points are awarded for each topic the answer is listed in.In the above example, you would get experience points in all three topics of movies, entertainment, and cars.
