In Mendelian genetics, when expressing genotypes, does a dash represent: it could be ANYTHING, or it is simply unknown?

I.e. Say the alleles X(a), X(b) and X(c) existed, and someone had the allele X(a)* , where the * could be either X(a) or X(b). Would it be appropriate to refer to it as X(a)- , even though there are three different alleles but only two possibilities?
