Who is the author of the quote "Live simply so others may simply live" and/or what are the real words to this saying? Citations required?

I know what you mean about everyone using that phrase. I was trying to find a citation for you and there were a dozen pages with that phrase as an article heading, a website slogan, etc. With no credit. The exact phrase is, "Live simply so that others may simply live", referring to the practice of sustainable living.

According to my first two sources, the speaker is Mahatma Ghandi, but Dale Jamieson's citation in his book 'Ethics and Environment' uses the phrase "often attributed to Ghandi", suggesting that there is no hard evidence. As far as the date, it seems that the phrase is the core principle of Ghandi's teachings (source 4), so it probably originates in his earlier years of resistance, possibly around the time of his job at a South African law firm where he was "appalled by the treatment of Indian immigrants" (source 5). Still, there is no concrete evidence that the phrase was coined by Ghandi.

Everyone online says it's from Gandhi, but no one can prove it. I searched his Complete Works for "live simply" and "simply live" and found nothing relevant. But I did find a ndi translation: साधारणता से जिओ ताकि और लोग भी साधारणतः जी सकें.

This is a quote from Mahatma Gandhi. Another variation I found: The Rich must live more simply so that the Poor may simply live.

This is clearly not resolved. The earliest source given in *multiple* references (Google) would seem to be: St, Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821) Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, USA, Speech given in the Diocese of Baltimore e.g. quotationspage.com/quote/33588.html This still needs original source confirmation, a date and context, which could be readily chased up by someone who needed to know (see her writings online, contact person etc.famvin.org/wiki/Collected_Writings_of_El... But note two things: 1) she is usually quoted as "Live simply so that all may simply live" not "others" 2) This is a maxim used by Quakers (founded c.1647) - no date. Gandhi may have independently and later coined the phrase in .

Yes, it was in fact him, as shown by the references below: Mahatma Gandhi also coined the phrase, "live simply so that others may simply live. " servantsasia.org/index.php/news/8-genera... Gandhi's second statement remains totally valid! Another version of it is: "let us learn to live simply, so that others may simply live" christian-ecology.org.uk/population-guil....

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
