Generally speaking, a PhD is for someone who wants to teach fulltime at the college level. So if that is your objective, then you should go for the Doctorate. But if you are looking towards business, I would guess you would prefer the MBA.

I really enjoyed my MBA program and found it to far more interesting and rewarding than undergrad. I have thought about a Doctorate several times - in OD. But everytime - I asked why?

Would it really help me in my business? I ultimately decided no.So you need to decide why you would want it? I was thinking for prestige and ego.

But then decided who cares? But get the MBA - I am sure you will really benefit from it .

PhD I don't know if they offer either degree in Leadership, but an MBA is a professional degree. It prepares you as a practitioner. A PhD is a research degree. It prepares you to ask and answer questions.

With an MBA, you are taught the current state of knowledge, and you go out, get a job, and try to apply it. However, when you run into problems on the job, it's a toss-up as to whether you'll be prepared to figure out how to solve them or not. With a PhD, you learn how to solve problems.

It's a very specific method. You start by researching the issue and seeing what is already known in the area. Then you craft your questions, specificially enough, that they fit very precisely into the current state of knowledge, and they are designed to attack a new area that we know little about.

Your questions are supported by hypotheses about what you think you are going to find. Finally, you gather data to help you answer the question, and you analyze that data. I believe these techniques are useful for any problem you care to face.

Further, you learn how to be skeptical, and how not to jump to unwarranted conclusions about your answers. A PhD will take longer, and you will learn a lot more. I think it's worth the time, and it will help you earn more, in the long run, if that's what a concern is.

But I'd say if you are the kind of person who loves solving problems, get the PhD. If you are more challenged by the competition -- get the MBA..

It all depends on what you want to do with the education and degree. A PhD is an absolute prerequisite for academia. If you plan to launch your own leadership consulting firm, both PhD and/or MBA could be very helpful.

If you intend to join an existing management consulting firm that specializes in or has a group that specializes in leadership and organizational performance issues, then an MBA will probably give you more flexibility. On the note of flexibility, the MBA will allow you to switch fields within business, assuming you tire of the leadership area after a few years. The PhD will mark you more of a research expert in that narrow area of business.

Good luck with whatever direction you choose. Sources: 3 decades of business experience .

The phd will go farther. A four year degree use to mean something back in the day now a masters is almost as useless.

1 The PhD is classically a "research degree" where you learn to set up research problems and solve them, then report the results. That is why one has to write a dissertation. Most Masters programs are to get you ready to work in the field.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
