Just to add a little more confusion for you. The terms LIBERAL and CONSERVATIVE do not have the same meaning in Canada as in the US. In the US it is a political philosophy.
In Canada it is the name of a POLITICAL party. You will need to look at party platforms to get a clear understanding. Using an American example you may see the the difference.
Democracy is supported by Democrats I guess that means Republicans must be against Democracy. Republicans favour a REPUBLIC that must mean the Democrats are against the current form of government.(A Republic).
It's a tough question because terms like Conservative (or Liberal) are not defined in a strict way. The Progressive Conservatives were conservatives (note the change in punctuation) who were more liberal but not willing to become Liberals. They could also be called Red Tories because Red is the colour of the political left and Tory is the old name for the Conservative party in England.
If you go more to the right you go further away from the liberal position. This brings you into the area carved up by the Reform Party. Reform was too small a group to win a federal election so they merged with the Progressive Conservatives to form the Conservative Party of Canada (under Stephen Harper).
This probably pushed some Red Tories into the arms of the Liberals. But it made the CPC (colour blue) large enough and united enough to have a chance at forming government. Which they did because although 60% of Canadians are not conservative, they are split on how liberal they are.
So with the Liberal and the New Democratic Party and the one lone Green Party member splitting the vote the CPC won a MAJORITY government with only 39% of votes cast in the last federal election. And people think hockey is exciting? It just doesn't get any better than this when it comes to a complex game where the stakes are so high.
You can choose not to pay to go watch hockey but you pay taxes so even if you choose to ignore elections, you've paid for your ticket! To make it more interesting, depending on the province you are in one party could be quite different from its label. The Alberta Progressive Conservatives just trounced the Wild Rose (Reform) Party but the Alberta PCs are almost Liberal in their policies.
Stephen Harper just passed a federal budget any Liberal Prime Minister would be happy with. Unlike hockey, you can't even tell what team someone is on because they say one thing and do another (or switch sides and cross the floor!) Ya gotta love it!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
