In what year was NYU founded?

NYU, or New York University, located in New York City, was founded in 1831. In July of 1832 the first building, now known as the University Building was built. Formal classes did not begin until October 1, 1831 after the inauguration in September.

NYU is a member of a distinguished group of 60 higher education institutions in the Association of American Universities. The main campus, in Washington Square in the heart of Greenwich Village is the hub for the university.
