Is a Fundie atheist capable of being every bit as dangerously intolerant as a fundie theist do you think?

It depends on the level of insanity of that pious people. In a Hindu/Buddhist/East Asian religions majority country anyone can be openly atheist. I don't know in which country you live but if it is some Islamic country then yes you might be in trouble but I hope not all are braindead in Islamic countries and people are not automatically killed for even mentioning the word atheism.

And as far as your question is concerned you two can meet in those localities where non-Muslims are majority because I'm sure except for Muslims and some Christians you are pretty much safe in telling another person about your atheism in such localities.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
