You can marry who you like. It's just a combination of if your parents are accepting of your wife, if they would rather have you marry someone who is of the same faith as you, and if you feel that it would be better for you to marry someone who is also Jewish. Basically, Jewish interfaith marriage is not traditionally permitted, but love is love and not all parents would take a hard stance on who their children choose to marry.
