I finally found a pepper mill for a reasonable price and ordered it online, but when I received it, I realized that it was actually a salt mill (my mistake, not the company's), though it looks the same to me (but I'm not expert). For a lot of reasons, it would be too much of a hassle to return, so I'm not interested in that, but I'm wondering, can I use this salt mill as a pepper mill, or are they different enough that it would cause damage? The mechanisms are likely different, as described here. Hardened steel vs stainless This site has info. And mills for sale-fantes.com/peugeot_pepper_salt.htmHere is the key paragraph that explains why the Peugeot brands (and perhaps others as well) use hardened steel for pepper and stainless for salt.
Hardened steel vs. stainless steel. For pepper mills, hardened steel is preferred over stainless because of its greater hardness, and therefore its ability to maintain sharp burrs over a much longer period of time than stainless. Though hardened steel can rust, under normal use a pepper mill will not come in contact with water to make it rust.
For salt, however, never use a hardened steel mill, since salt is highly corrosive. This brand-saltnpeppersplus.com/peppermills.aspuses ceramic for salt. So, I would suggest checking your particular brand to see if the materials used are different.

Not necessarily, but if you want a mill to last for any length of time with salt, you need to make sure that there are no metal parts coming into contact with the salt itself. This doesn't matter with pepper and other spices, but salt will corrode the metal and render the device useless rather quickly, especially if you are one of the perfectionists that maintains their sea salt in a moist condition for best flavor. You don't have to spend much money on these, either; Wal-Mart handles a cheap little mill with ceramic grinding surfaces that will last a LONG time.

You can use pepper in a salt mill but not salt in a pepper mill. Salt mills have a non-corosive material for the blades so they can be used for anything, Peppermills have metal for blades that salt would corrode.
A salt mill has a ceramic mechanism in it so it worn't corode, while a pepper mill is made of metal I don't see why you couldn't use the salt mill as a pepper mill. It should work just fine.
Salt Mill Not a lot of difference. In a set, the salt mill is marked "S" and the pepper mill is marked "P". Salt mills also sometimes have different grinding mechanisms than pepper mills do.
Salt is very acidic and corrodes metal over time.
