Top or front loading I never saw an agitator in a European washing machine. Maytag invented the first agitator style machine sold int he US but a Maytag was one of the least efficient cleaning washers in the industry during the period when all of our washers had agitators. I used a top loading machine with no agitator in Italy and it seemed to do just as good a job.
I think there are propeller type machines in Asia but I've never seen one. I own a front loader. The one thing I'm not crazy about is when I push the delay button to put in another piece of clothing, water drips out the front - it's inevitable.
I suspect, but don't know for sure, that the agitator creates more wear and tear on clothing. I find this all confusing as well but the absence of the agitator allows the machine to handle more laundry per load.

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio which has no agitator and have no problem with it. I follow the instruction booklet that states to put the clothes around the sides and not over the middle part.
