NO Macs can have viruses, there are little over 65 viruses for mac out on net. As for macs running smoothly, they do run smoothly because mac OS was designed to respond to whatever the user wants running. It doesn't do anything unless you tell it to.

As for the software issue, Lion is now able to run many softwares on macs, expect games. Gaming is best on PC or windows. If your paying for the laptop, dell is of course cheaper but you will expect issues in the future because reliability and build quality is a big question.

MacBook is better computer in every aspect (except for hardware.) Macbooks are not super gaming computers but they are fast and manage very good battery life which you need for college lectures. You can dual boot on macs, so you will be alble to have 2 operating systems rather than one with dell. You will enjoy working on macs, almost all of premed majors in my university have macs because of its ease of use.

I would recommend a Mac, buy online its a lot cheapere than buying at apple store. EDIT: Mac guys don't charge $200 an hour, around $65 to $95 (depending upon education level).

For a brand Mac books is the definite option. The one I would recommend you to go for the macbook pro. They definitely get no viruses or any other errors and run without any hanging problem.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
