Your question is very articulate and I agree with most of it. Yes, music is mostly subjective to the ear of the listener and the personality that goes with it. I'm a classical fan.
I cannot stand to listen to modern songs, be it rap, hip-hop, rock, or whatever. Some country is okay and some popular stuff is okay. For instance, I was a teen in the 60s and of course the Beatles were all the rage.
I did not like them. They were not the style I was raised to enjoy. Even now, I have to admit that the Beatles were actually pretty good musicians and a great deal of talent was demonstrated in their music.
I still don't like listening to them. To me, the classics are timeless. Now to the twist in my comments.
There is such a thing in life as good and bad. Granted, not everyone will agree with the source of the definition for good and bad, but I submit that in life, and nearly all aspects of it, there is truly a good and bad. Music is no different.
Here is how to detemine if the music is good or bad. "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things." That comes from the 13th Article of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In other words, if the music is uplifting, edifying, of good report, praiseworthy and contains virtue, then it is good music. If it tends to agitate, tear down, depressing, demoralizing, dischordant and/or ugly to the ears and to the mind and the spirit of the listener, then it is bad music. I had a heated discussion with a fellow missionary once about being able to feel the spirit while at a rock concert.
He claimed yes and I claimed no. Nothing was settled on that matter. I suppose that means that ultimately it is still up to the individual whether the music is uplifting or depressing, good or bad.
Yes...everything you said is basically true.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
