Yes Trsmd, Diwali is the most important festival of the hindus and is celebrated all over india. As far as I learned the god Ram defeated the evil prince Ravan and rescued his wife Sita from ravan. When ram returned from Shri Lanka and came back to Ayodhya.

There was happiness and joy on people's faces and hearts. So the returning of ram to ayodhya at that time people celebrated diwali and from that day people celebrate diwali.
