Evil exists everywhere irrespective to geographical boundaries. Some Indian, Pakistani and South African players were indulged in match-fixing in past. Recently three Pakistani players were imprisoned under spot-fixing offense.
Some Australian players were also caught while providing team information to Bookies. There are several cases of Match fixing too in County cricket. Former Sri Lankan player Hashan Tillekaratne claimed that match fixing has been a widespread practice in Sri Lankan cricket since 1992.
Some Indian Premier League players are accused of spot fixing in recent tournament. As you have mentioned, in other sports which are rarely played as mainstream-sports in South Asia, are also suffering with sports fixing. Sometimes things comes in limelight and sometimes not, but sparks are everywhere atleast.
Subcontinent is biggest victim of fixing, reason being presence of Under-world (Dawood Ibrahim) in Pakistan who controls the Bookmakers and betting business in South Asia. It’s also true that controversial issues are depressed outside the continent when accused have milky skin. Today cricket has changed, Fixing structure and Methodology have also changed.
The modern face of fixing is Spot-fixing, which is much easier than Match-Fixing for Bookies to execute and same time hard to trace. Just fix few no-balls, wides or specific small action of players and you've done. New unheard young players of 18-25 age groups are targeted by Bookies because they are aspirant, financially insecure and easy to manipulate.
Why someone will try to fix the whole match when same money can be made through fixing one Wide ball? An intentional no-ball is hard to notice in comparison to throwing whole match intentionally. Spot fixing provides lot of ease to Bookies and same time very little risk involves.
Spot fixing hardly have any effect on match-results still it is unfair and unacceptable. I doubt there can be any match fixing in the cricket in the future considering the evolution of Spot-fixing. As far as I understood your question, you have asked that- Is Match-fixing very common in subcontinent as belief existing in the minds of Non-Subcontinent people and in the hearts of some disappointed hopeless Subcontinent fans?
My answer is straight no. First, Match-Fixing is an extinct practice. Spot Fixing is the future.
Spot fixing hardly influences match results so Spectators still can enjoy the game despite of the fact that one bowler has promised a bookie to throw two no-balls in third over. Second, players are being paid today more than they do deserve as per their talent, character and hard-work they put on field. Some people may keep criticizing the Twenty-Twenty leagues but its undeniable fact that T20s are pulling those people to stadiums who were disappointed due to boring five-days-draws.
Only 11 players can play at a single time in national squad irrespective to the population of the country. But T20s are providing an effective way to earn the money today to hundreds of cricketers, who could be trapped by Devil of Fixing. Why should someone go for fixing when he can earn enough while playing sixteen T20 matches in a year?
Third, as I said Fixing-Devil owns no home. He lives on rent and keeps roaming all over the world. Fixing is a common issue in all sports-nations.
Fourth, some people are born haters, they keep spreading rumors like bulk mail. Just click spam button on them and ignore. Fifth, Fixing term is now being used across the cricket community very loosely.
There are millions fans of cricket world-wide, certainly some Sub-continent fans are not matured enough to accept that opposition has defeated them fair and square. They usually found easiest & comfortable way to call the match fix for settling down the frustration. This is not only in the case of IPL, it could be also seen during last world cup.
We should enjoy the game, if there is anything suspicious (not psychologically but evidentially), then we should try to correct it. Edit: Sanga Keep yourself updated. It was British newspaper who claimed that one Sri lankan player had fix the match with the help of Indian actress to disrepute Sri lankan players and Bollywood for selling more number of copies.
Today no one would say that she/he had any role in any type of fixing after knowing that three cricketers were imprisoned under a fixing scandal recently.
This Site Might Help You. RE: Cricket-Match fixing, is it for real or are we being programmed into thinking that any match involving SubCont? --Any match involving Sub Cont teams against each other or against them is fixed.
-- Don't think that allegations or talk about fixed matches does not affect us in the Sub Cont. Having lived abroad, I have seen that things are pretty much straight forward & there are no side distractions or ways...
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
