Definitely not just a trend. When I first went natural in '93, it was sooo strange to people. Now, natural hair is seen as more of a legitimate style option, although it's still viewed as "radical" by some black people.
I wish that more black women with beautiful waves and curls would stop relaxing their hair and straight hair would be a rarity, but that's just my wishful thinking.
I agree with Emmeaki, I don't think it is just a trend. Today going natural is much more about being healthy and getting in touch with the way we were naturally made rather than trying to be different and unique even though some people still do it for that reason. The natural hair world is growing rapidly because people now have access to information about how to care for their hair properly.
There is a lot less ignorance about it. Some people will never accept their natural hair but more and more people are.
I think it has already changed what society considers the norm. Not only Black people have gotten back into natural hair. I live in Israel, and there are many curly haired people here, and summers are extremely hot.
Even people who would normally wear processed hair themselves, braid their kids' hair partly because it's cute, partly because it is literally cooler, and partly because it looks neater as the day drags on. Yulia Tymoshenko is also bringing braids back in Europe. So now it's not unusual at all to see people with braids or dreadlocks, even outside of the artistic circles of society. It is not really trendy anymore because it doesn't need to be.
It has normalized. So you won't see as many people going out of their way to get a style that doesn't suit their hair type, but they will happily wear styles that do. Some may find it a little disturbing, but FLDS women are lately being considered the go-to people for natural hairstyles for straight haired people.
Some of their styles are very fancy.
I don't think it's a trend. I believe it's here to stay. Most women who are transitioning or have BC'ed have really taken time out to research techniques on caring for and styling their Natural Hair.It wasn't just a flippant decision to try out something new.
It was a life choice. Most of our reasons range from choosing a chemical-free, healthier option to care for our hair while others focus on growing their hair to new lengths (since it's not as fragile as chemically treated hair). We've gone through a process to get to this point, and I don't believe our natural hair movement is reversible.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
