Is satellite radio worth it? Which is better - XM or Sirius?

I'm sick of the local radio stations when driving - too many diamond store ads! Shane company, EE Robins... etc. Seriously, is "getting engaged" a Seattle hobby? I don't want anymore "Friends in the diamond business".

I was a skeptic, but I'm totally sold now. My car came with XM. I thought it was a gimmick, and was prepared to let the subscription lapse after the 3 month trial period - since I live in L.A., where there are at least three stations I love (KCRW, "Indie 103" - KDLD, and KROQ).

However, after the three months, I gladly renewed for a full 3 years (at the time, it was a real bargain, at $100/year). The sound quality is noticeably better, and the lack of commercials is a much bigger deal than I expected. It’s also nice to hear the uncensored versions of at least some songs (XM is really inconsistent, though, and still plays radio edits of some).

I’m still not wild about their traffic - the local stations, with their helicopters and legions of phone spotters, are much more timely, and it’s not unusual to hear laughably bad pronunciations of street names like La Cienaga and Cahuenga (and even Pico). But the traffic is always there, at the press of a button, without having to wait for "traffic on the ones" to come around again. XM’s coverage of Live 8 was also outstanding, with a number of the regular stations given up to specific stages.

Last year, at Christmas, they had a special group of Christmas stations, each with their own focus (comedy, country, traditional, etc. ). Having said that, I’ll warn you not to get too attached to any one station or DJ; Musiclab went online-only a while ago to make room for more Canadian content, and I miss Walt Flakus (ex-Stabbing Westward) and his "Six degrees of Fred" feature he used to do. I don’t have my computer set up for sound, but if I did, I think the free online service would be a very nice bonus.

However, I’m so sold on the service I’m seriously considering getting a portable unit. (Note that if your system is properly equipped, you can try XM free for 3 days .) I’ve never lost signal for more than a few seconds (usually around tall buildings), which is great when driving a long distance. In fact, I’ve hardly used the CD/MP3 player on my car.

Since there’s actually a 4 second buffer on the signal, bridges are usually no problem. In addition, there are a number of terrestrial transmitters that fill in coverage gaps. All this happens automagically. And I almost forgot to mention one of the neatest features: You can instantly find out the song/artist currently playing.

Alas, it’s limited to 16 characters each (and I gather it’s not just my receiver that limits it). Of course, your experience will vary depending on your musical interests, but since you mention diamond store ads, which tend to be common on "modern rock" stations, I’m assuming you may have similar tastes. I should also mention that I was recently stuck in a rental for over 2 weeks while my car was in the shop, and XM is one of the things I missed the most (well, besides the fact that the rental was a Hyundai econobox and my regular car is a 'vette...).

Sorry, can’t speak for Sirius - never tried it, and since I’m no fan of Stern, don’t really have a desire to. However, I will note that they do not appear to have the 16-character limit on artist/song titles. Sources: Personal experience.

If you can pay for it yes. My vote goes to XM. Satellite radio is definitely worth it if you can justify spending the money.

Its basically the same as saying is cable TV worth it? Its expensive I agree, but most of use that want entertainment would probably say yes. My reason for XM would be twofold.

First, I have friends that have XM, they get great reception, great selection of channels, and it just seems like you get more for your money. Secondly and my main reason would be that XM has partnered with MLB (Major League Baseball) to broadcast every game of the season on their network. This is huge, especially for an out of market baseball fan.

Being able to listen to my game and hear the local broadcast whether I am at home, the office, my car, etc, would alone be worth the money. When all is said and done though, it really comes down to this. Do you want to listen to Howard Stern?

If yes, then Sirius, otherwise, join XM. Also, Sirius has the NFL games. Depends on your taste - I love Howard Stern so I love Sirius..... they have great comedy and music - the stuff from way back when..the good stuff! Oprah is on XM, so I like them "not so much", but they do have Nascar! Here is an informative link for you - radiosatellite.org/ .

Unless you really need news on-demand, I really see satellite radio as an over-engineered product.

2 Price is still a little bit too high for me. I guess the companies need to recoup the money for putting satellites in orbit. Wonder what happens when an electronic component fails in those satelites?

Anyway, I don't mind listening to those ads on broadcast radio, since the advertisers are paying for it. In the world of free, no one should be paying for entertainment/information.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
