Is the new NDM-1 contagious? Should I avoid contact with people suspected of having NDM-1?

NDM-1 is not as contagious as the swine flu, but it is contagious. It is reported that you can catch the NDM-1 from someone infected as you would most normal colds. NDM-1 can be transmitted through hospital procedures, bodily contact and by food preparation.

If you of anyone infected with the NDM-1 you should absolutely stay away. Hopefully they are isolated in the hospital to begin with, but the best thing to do is to stay away from anyone who is sick, in general. Wash your hands often and practice good hygiene. It is suggested that if you do come down with NDM-1 you will be given an antibiotic cocktail in hopes one of them will work.

There are strands of NDM-1 that will not respond to any antibiotics. Therefore it is essential that we take steps and precautions from getting sick including staying away from unnecessary procedures, eliminate any travel to countries with reported cases of NDM-1 and stay away from sick people.
