Is there a difference between a shamrock and a clover?

There is a debate that shamrocks are smaller than clovers, but that hasn't been verified. Basically, a shamrock is a common name for any plant species belonging to the genus Trifolium. The word shamrock does come, though, from the Irish word 'seamrog' which means 'little clover.
