As of 2008, Madagascar has 99 taxa (species and subspecies) of lemur, which range in size from the 30 gram Madame Berthe's Mouse Lemur to the large Indri and Diademed Sifaka Many of the newest species were described since 2000, but not all researchers agree with the recent increase in the number of newly recognized species. Some feel that new species are being declared without sufficient research, often to give support for political conservation efforts. Although this helps protect endangered lemur populations, it could backfire and result in less government support.
