Is there truly such a thing as "sex addiction?" In as far as Tiger Woods' "excuse" for his philanderings?

Yes, there is such a thing as sex addiction, but it has nothing to do with sex that comes from love, close bonds, or intimacy, and more to do with finding a sexual outlet to deal with non-sexual emotional issues. It involves risk taking and poor judgement. Clinical depression can accompany the behavior.

A friend of mine suffered from this, and suffered for it. Sex addiction is a secretive disease, it isn't sexy, and one can't conclude that if two sex addicts got together they'd be happy with that fact. Many of his friends who weren't aware of his condition only learned of it gradually, after his funeral.

He committed suicide when he was about to be outed in a very public manner. Addictive behavior (of almost any sort) is destructive, and can be treated, but the addict must first realize they need treatment. My friend apparently never admitted he needed help.

(No names, just general case information! ) Enough to know some important keywords, and to have recognized what was going on with my friend, if I'd given it some thought.As they say, is 20/20.

Sexual addiction is a real malady, but it's not like the sufferers are addicted to sex itself. Rather, they are addicted to the adrenaline and thrills associated with the dangers surrounding illicit sexual behavior. Like anybody afflicted with any addiction, yes, behaviors are out of control.Do sufferers use their addiction as an "excuse" to get away with behaviors that society doesn't tolerate?

You betcha! That's the nature of an addictive cycle. Any rationale, any justification, any excuse works — as long as the cycle can continue.

Addiction of any sort is like an evil demon puppet master working from inside to generate all sorts of bizarre and irrational behaviors. In the end, that doesn't excuse the sufferer, though. THere is still free will and responsibility.

Okay, there is such a thing as a sex addiciton. I do think that some people use this as an excuse for their bad behaviors. I have never had any addictions thus far, but I know that those who don't have them don't really understand how hard they are to get away from.

Most addictions whether it be drugs, food, or sex have underlying issues more than likely dealing with things from their past. In essence yes it is true, but it also an excuse. As far as Tiger Woods goes, I don't know if he really is an addict or not.

Yes, indirectly, I have read an article that according to a research pornography will lead to sex addiction and psychological damage. These researches have also noted that pornography's effect on the brain is very similar to heroin, cocaine or crack addiction.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
